Clutter help on radio #4

August 11th, 2008
· Filed Under: Home Clutter Solutions

Common mistakes made to deal with clutter and the benefits of being clutter free.

radio microphoneThese include strategies like buying storage containers such as crates, cabinets, shelving, boxes, racks etc to ‘organise’ it. What’s happened? you’ve bought MORE stuff when first; you need to be getting rid of stuff and second; you should know exactly what you’re storing BEFORE you buy storage containers. what’s the point in buying a cabinet to store large items when if you de-clutter appropriately you may only need a few small boxes which you could find amongst the clutter you you sort through.

Another poor solution is extending the house by adding rooms, putting a shed in the backyard and yet another is  renting storage space. THEN the ultimate is  moving to a larger home where you ultimately collect even more stuff that becomes clutter. These options treat the symptoms but don’t cure the cause. Furthermore they’re expensive ways of dealing with stuff most of which you don’t need.

The Benefits of decluttering and getting organised cannot be understated, it could be sexier but not underestimated. There is often an enormous sense of relief and liberation experienced by people who eliminate the excess stuff in their lives. In addition you can uncover spending habits that are eroding your finances and keeping you from saving, getting out of debt &/or enjoying more fulfilling experiences. Some health problems can be reduced or eliminated by removing clutter - these include infections and respiratory problems. Your sex life, social life, family life and even work life can dramitcally improve Furthermore eliminating all that physical stuff can often lead into other life-changing processes such as weight loss.

that’s it for this time in the next episode find out what why a clutter free home and organised life is so important and what’s the solution

Are You In the Majority or Minority with you Clutter Problem + What are the Consequences of Clutter.

The following is a transcrpit of the 2 minute radio segments I present 3 times per week on 101FM You can listen in live via the website every Mon-Wed-Fri at around 2:30PM AEST (Sun-Tue-Thur at 9:30PM PT  12:30AM ET 4:30AM GM)

radio microphoneSO is clutter a common problem or not?
An Australia institute survey  revealed that a whooping 88% of Australians have at least one cluttered room with the average at 3-4. SO you’re not exception to the rule - YOU’re NOT alone with your clutter.

Now the bad news is that 4 in 10 of those surveyed are anxious depressed or guilty about their of clutter. in addition to those feelings , there are the health and safety issues PLUS an often diminished lifestyle because of the  chaos and frustration and resulting lost time accompanies it.

So what are the Consequences of Clutter? These can be quite extensive from a negative impact on relationships with , children, other family and friends,  a spouse even contributing to a  lack of romance & poor sex life
Clutter may also be at the core of poor habits that leave parents out of touch with their children, and often is a major factor in poor social life for the family. In this survey is this respondant comment a thought of yours?  ‘It means I can’t have people over. There’s nowhere for them to sit, and we
can’t have dinner because there’s too much stuff on the table.’

Serious clutter and the associated lack of airflow in the home can contribute to health problems like allergies and respiratory complaints and even more sombre is the high risk of serious injury or death in the event of a fire. Clutter will contribute to the fire load and toxicity and hamper your ability to evacuate. This could mean the loss of a family member and even that of the firefighters trying to save your life and your home.

That’s it for this time in the next segment find out the common mistakes made to deal with clutter and the benefits of being clutter free.

Clutter and the Mindset connection + A Strategy for the elderly.

The following is a transcrpit of the 2 minute radio segments I present 3 times per week on 101FM You can listen in live via the website every Mon-Wed-Fri at around 2:30PM AEST (Sun-Tue-Thur at 9:30PM PT  12:30AM ET 4:30AM GM)

radio microphoneNow  it’s very  important to clarify the topic of psychological conditions of which clutter is the result, there is  the OCD known as hoarding  - this condition effects  in the USA just 1% of the pop’ (we could expect similar figures in Australia) Then there is also a lesser known condition called Cluttering manifesting ADHD like symptoms. Clutterers have not crossed the line into hoarding - but an informal survey in the US found that some 30% of the population could be deemed clutterers. With that said though - It’s vital that if you suspect that you or a friend or family member may be a hoarder or clutterer  THEN YOU MUST avoid self diagnosing and seek a trained professional. People with such issues need help and alternative strategies for dealing with their clutter.

Next -  If you’re retired and have accumulated a considerable amount of possessions over your life time and you’re thinking that your clutter doesn’t really bother you & you’re happy to leave it be - that’s fine!  but you might like to consider the rather sombre subject of what will happen to it all when you pass. If there are some very important items,  from the viewpoint of your family history that no one knows about  there is a high chance that they may well end up in a charity shop going for a couple of dollars or worse still being dumped.
Why don’t you make going through all your things a hobby. Bit by bit investigate all those cupboards, closets and boxes you have things stored in . Attach notes to important items about there history or story, let family members know about the particular meaning or importance it has for you. You could also  create a list of those items and who you’d like to care for that item after you’ve gone this might include charities and other non family recipients , remember to include the list in your will or leave with a trusted person.

That’s it for this time in the next segment find out if you’re in the maj or min with your clutter problem and what are the consequences of lots of clutter

What is Clutter and what causes it?

The following is a transcrpit of the 2 minute radio segments I present 3 times per week on 101FM You can listen in live via the website every Mon-Wed-Fri at around 2:30PM AEST (Sun-Tue-Thur at 9:30PM PT  12:30AM ET 4:30AM GM)

So what is clutter?

Dictionary definitions tell us it is;
"a ‘crowded and untidy collection of things" "A confused or disordered state or collection; a jumble" and  "A lack of order or regular arrangement".
TO an organiser it’s anything that you don’t use, have a use for or need regularly and anything that does not have a place or purpose, and is not in it’s place.

Clutter takes many forms and appears in every aspect of life from paper clutter in an office to the email and electronic files cluttering up hardrives to clothes in the laundry to absurd volumes of toys in kids bedrooms.
So What causes it?
Clutter can manifest  due to a hectic lifestyle it can be because of overwhelm due to big events or changes in your life, for example having children, caring for loved one, a death  accident  in the family,, and career change or job loss. These events can cause even an organised person to become overwhelmed loos habits and the clutter accumulates.
In addition to these reasons ARE our own habits for dealing with all of our stuff we have for eg
Emotional clutter - are those sentimental things you feel reluctant to discard.
Just in case clutter - all those things you just might need one day even though you never have
Bargain clutter - those irresitably cheap or free items that you really don’t need, but were  sooo cheap! that fact that you just don’t need of them appears to be  irrelevant!
And finally Bought clutter those impulse buys often  pricey items that don’t get used but you paid good money for so eliminating them seems like burning money
It’s hard to resist the convincing sales pitches and alluring images of longed for happiness, status or whatever so we make the purchase but don’t have a strategy for teh other end of the process - the after consumption.
Clutter means you have more coming into your home that you have going out - in other words your home is constipated! think about that one!

That’s it for this time in the next segment we’ll cover the issue of psychological conditions relating to clutter, a great concept for cluttered elderly folk.
