By Beverly E Taylor

A kid’s room can get messy in the blink of an eye. Parents really want their kids to avoid clutter and keep their rooms nice. So how do you teach a child to clean their room? It’s all about the details. This article will show you how to give your child the gift of good habits. And it’s easier than you might think. Even if you yourself are a clutterer, you can try these easy ideas to teach your child how to clean their room.

Describe exactly what you mean by “clean your room.” You may know what you mean with just those three words - make bed, put dirty clothes in the hamper, put toys away, etc. But do your kids know all that? Most likely not. Help them out by being as clear as possible every time and saying it in a gentle, neutral tone. Once they establish some good habits, you may be able to leave out some details without having a misunderstanding.

Help your kids break up the job into smaller parts from the beginning. You can a make a short list of either cleaning activities or areas of their room. The key is to start with smaller areas -kids can be easily overwhelmed without some direction. You will be teaching them about seeing a large project as something they can accomplish. Baby steps can be so helpful. You are starting them off on a good path!

Show your kids exactly what you mean. Do some cleaning up with them so they can watch what you do. Kids can learn a lot from seeing your good example. Talk to them in a pleasant or even happy tone as you do it to reinforce the message. You could say, “See how I’m getting all of the dirty clothes in here? If your hamper is full, you can put your dirty clothes in the basement hamper.”
